As part of the ongoing collaboration to support the long-term sustainability of European football, European Leagues and UEFA have today launched the first ever Football Event Sustainability Manual. The manual will act as a new practical resource designed to help domestic leagues, their affiliated clubs and National Associations further embed sustainability into football event operations.

Developed jointly by European Leagues and UEFA, the manual provides practical guidance on integrating Environmental, Social and Governance considerations across all stages of event and competition organisation. From planning and operations to post-event evaluation, the publication offers adaptable recommendations, checklists and examples of good practice that can be applied across football competitions of all sizes.

As organisers of professional domestic football competitions across Europe, leagues have a key role to play in driving sustainability within the football ecosystem. Through the organisation of competitions and matchdays involving hundreds of clubs and millions of supporters every weekend, domestic leagues are uniquely positioned to support the integration of sustainability practices, promote more responsible operations and generate positive environmental and social impact across their communities.

The manual also includes case studies from leagues and clubs across Europe, showcasing how domestic football competitions are already advancing sustainability through initiatives relating to mobility, environmental management, accessibility, inclusion and governance.

By supporting leagues, clubs and National Associations in embedding sustainability into their operations, European Leagues and UEFA aim to strengthen football’s contribution to environmental responsibility, social inclusion and good governance, ensuring that competitions continue to create a positive impact both on and off the pitch positioning football as a best-practice industry on which others can learn from.

About the European Leagues Sustainability Expert Group

The Football Event Sustainability Manual is one of the initiatives developed through the European Leagues Sustainability Expert Group. Established in 2025, the group brings together representatives from 17 member leagues to exchange knowledge, strengthen cooperation and discuss common sustainability challenges and opportunities, in a context where professional leagues are increasingly placing sustainability at the heart of their activities and long-term development.
