European Leagues visited the Azerbaijan Professional Football League in Baku

On Tuesday 28 of May, the General Secretary of the European Leagues Georg Pangl visited the Azerbaijan Professional Football League ahead of the UEFA Europa League Final in Baku.

The General Secretary of the European Leagues had the opportunity to meet with President Ramin Musayev and a delegation of the Azerbaijani league. The two organizations exchanged on European football matters and most importantly Georg Pangl had the opportunity to give an update and brief the Azerbaijani Clubs about the current vision for UEFA club competitions from 2024 onwards.

As explained to the President of Azerbaijan PFL during the meeting, the presently discussed concept presented by UEFA and supported by the European Club Association (ECA) would have unacceptable consequences for the Azerbaijan Professional Football League.

The clubs strongly committed to defend the sporting merit in domestic league competitions as the sole criteria to qualify to international club competitions such as the present UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The Azerbaijan Professional Football League clubs are against the introduction of more matchdays than there are currently. The clubs support the introduction of a fairer revenue distribution model and the substantial increase of solidarity within UEFA club competitions so as to protect the competitive balance in the domestic league competitions.

The Azerbaijan Professional Football League was admitted as full Member of the European Leagues in 2013. The league comprises nowadays 8 clubs in the Topaz Premier League and 14 clubs in 1 Division which compose the structure of professional football in Azerbaijan.
