European Leagues statement on today’s Opinion of the CJEU Advocate General

The European Leagues welcome the conclusions of the General Advocate of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in the case C-333/21 European Super League.

The European Leagues commend the confirmation of existing jurisprudence which protects the fundamental principles of the sport pyramid model such as the openness of competitions and the qualification for international competitions via domestic leagues’ annual sporting merits.

Although the conclusions published today are not binding, the European Leagues are confident that the judges of the Court of Justice of the EU will follow those conclusions when issuing their final verdict in the coming months.

The leagues support the current sport pyramid model, which ensures solidarity between the professional game and grassroots football.

The positive development of professional club football relies on the coexistence and balance between domestic leagues and European club competitions.
