This week, the European Leagues administration, joined by a representative from Liga Portugal, attended the Sixth Meeting of the Committee on Safety and Security at Sports Events (T-S4) in Strasbourg. This marked the European Leagues’ first participation since being granted Observer status at the Saint-Denis Convention earlier this year.
In addition to its integration into the Committee of the Saint-Denis Convention, the European Leagues have reactivated their Task Force on Stadia, Safety, and Security, comprising a group of experts who convene regularly. This initiative further reinforces the commitment of member leagues to enhancing safety and security at football matches across Europe while ensuring the perspectives of national competition organisers are effectively represented in discussions at the Council of Europe.
Key discussions addressed topics like collective bans for supporters, the use of pyrotechnics at sports events, and updates on past and upcoming monitoring visits to member states. The agenda also provided insights into safety and security measures for major events, including a retrospective on the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a preview of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The meeting also included updates on EU-CoE joint projects, such as the Balance S4 project, which focuses on strengthening the safety and service pillars of the Saint-Denis Convention, as well as important topics like “Combating Hate Speech in Sport” and the “All-in Plus” project, which promotes gender equality.
