Today, the European Leagues gathered in Paris for the first in-person Board of Directors meeting of the new cycle, under the leadership of President Claudius Schäfer and hosted by the French Ligue de Football Professionnel.
With the domestic season coming to an end, also marking the conclusion of the first edition of the new UEFA Club Competitions format, the leagues took the opportunity to discuss the current state of European professional football and reflect on what marks a pivotal moment for the future of the game.
Today’s discussions took place just one day before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States, FIFA’s imposition of the international match calendar, including the unilateral introduction and expansion of international competitions to the detriment of domestic football, has recently been challenged by our association and FIFPRO Europe in a complaint to the European Commission.
As the pressure on the calendar intensifies due to an increasing number of international fixtures, alongside growing financial and sporting polarisation within domestic competitions, the European Leagues believes it is time for all football stakeholders to come together and find sustainable solutions for professional football with a more inclusive and collaborative governance model. This is essential to address these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sport.
In this context, the Board had the opportunity to review the proposal of the Union of European Clubs (UEC) regarding their Player Development Rewards policy aiming at improving financial distribution in European football while rewarding training clubs across the continent.
