European leagues gather in Nyon to discuss challenges in the Governance of the game

This week, European Leagues members gathered for the last in-person meeting of the year on the topic of “Governance”, held at the European Leagues office in Nyon, Switzerland.

As one of the priority topics within the member services structure, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for participants to engage in discussions on both domestic and international governance challenges affecting European club football, while also strengthening relationships and fostering exchanges between member leagues.

Amid a critical period for governance matters, the meeting addressed key issues for domestic leagues, focusing particularly on the relationships and agreements between leagues and National Associations, as well as their respective responsibilities on various matters. Leagues from countries including Greece, the Czech Republic, and Sweden shared valuable insights into their domestic governance frameworks, offering examples of successes and ongoing challenges.

International governance matters were also a key focus of the discussions. Participants addressed the escalating challenges of an increasingly congested international match calendar (IMC), with insights from the World Leagues Association. Additionally, UEFA delivered a presentation on the rising significance of financial sustainability, highlighting important developments such as recent surge in private capital investment in sports globally and assessing its impact on the integrity of European club football.

This in-person meeting marked the last physical gathering of the year for European Leagues members, opening great areas of collaboration between leagues for the upcoming year.
