Nyon, 17 July 2025 – The European Leagues welcomes the adoption of the report on the “Role of EU Policies in Shaping the European Sport Model” by the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education (CULT). The report reinforces the central role of domestic competitions within the pyramidal structure of European sports.
The Rapporteur Bogdan Zdrojewski clearly stresses the need to preserve the model’s founding principles – such as diversity, solidarity, sporting merit, and inclusion – while ensuring sport’s sustainable development from grassroots to professional levels, something that member of the European leagues are implementing day in – day out.
The report also underlines the need to improve governance in sport by increasing transparency and structured involvement of stakeholders such as leagues and players in the decision-making processes of international federations. This is particularly important to counterbalance FIFA’s continued lack of stakeholder involvement in their decisions on the International Match Calendar (IMC) which has led to a congested football calendar threatening the health and safety of players and the sustainability of domestic leagues.
We look forward to the final plenary vote scheduled for September 2025 and the confirmation that the European Parliament supports our vision for a modern and inclusive governance model for European sports.
