European Leagues (formerly EPFL) held a first Club Advisory Platform meeting in Amsterdam today (Monday 23rd April) where Leagues and Clubs met to discuss a variety of issues facing European football including competitive balance in domestic and international competitions.

This new Advisory Platform is part of a European Leagues governance structure and process where member leagues bring some of their clubs to meetings where a wider view is discussed to reflect all parts of the European professional football landscape.

The overwhelming view of the meeting was that a lack of competitive balance was causing and has the potential to cause very significant challenges for clubs and leagues alike across both domestic and international competitions. Failure to address this fundamental issue facing football today will have far reaching and long term implications on the popularity of the game from both a financial and fans perspective. Across a wide range of issues discussed there was a very clear consensus that clubs, leagues, all stakeholders need to act collegiately putting aside short term self-interest and taking a more medium and long term perspective.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting the President of European Leagues Lars-Christer Olsson said “it is important that we listen and consult with all stakeholders across our Leagues. Our role is to protect and enhance competitive balance across professional league competitions for the good of the game, the players, the fans and of course the clubs. This first Club Advisory Platform has been very helpful to us as we look to enhance and fulfil our mandate as the voice of European Football Leagues across Europe”.
