Women’s European Leagues platform officially launched to drive development and professionalism in Women’s league Football

Nyon, 22 July 2025 – Representatives from professional domestic women’s club competitions gathered today at the European Leagues’ offices in Nyon, Switzerland, to officially launch the Women’s European Leagues platform.

The initiative aims to facilitate collective collaboration, ensure coordinated representation at continental level and foster structured engagement with key stakeholders. The platform is open to women’s leagues with an independent professional structure or leagues integrated with the men’s professional league as “Ordinary Members”. Considering the rapidly evolving landscape of women’s football, federations responsible for their national women’s league also have the opportunity to join the platform as “Associate” Members.

Across Europe, national women’s football leagues and their member clubs are increasingly recognised as the foundation of professionalism in the women’s game. Given the acceleration of professional women’s football, the establishment of the Women’s European Leagues platform offers a timely opportunity for these leagues to align their strategic priorities and collectively influence the future of domestic women’s club football. The platform will foster knowledge sharing, develop collective business opportunities, and act as the leading representative body on all matters of common interest for member leagues.

The Women’s European Leagues will play a key role in defending the interests of its members towards the European football stakeholder family and towards EU Institutions, especially in matters related to the calendar and scheduling of competitions, labour and social dialogue affairs and the development of both international club football and national team football.

During the kick-off meeting, participants appointed a Management Board composed of four league leaders – including a Chair – to represent them. The Management Board includes:

  1. Fiona McIntyre – Managing Director of SWPL (SCO) – Chair
  2. Nikki Doucet – CEO of WSL Football (ENG)
  3. Beatriz Alvarez – President of Liga F (ESP)
  4. Anders Billström – Chairman of Elitfotboll Dam (SWE)

Fiona McIntyre, newly elected Chair of the Women’s European Leagues, said: “The establishment of the Women’s European Leagues Platform is a historic day for women’s football in Europe. The role of leagues in advancing women’s football cannot be under-estimated, and this new platform will enable leagues to work collectively and collaboratively with key stakeholders across the game to advance our shared objective for the development of women’s football in Europe.”

The kick-off event also welcomed representatives from key European institutional stakeholders from National Associations, Players and Clubs. Their participation helped initiate forward-looking discussions and opened the way for a shared agenda focusing on advancing the professional development of women’s club football throughout Europe.
