EPFL Chairman Frédéric Thiriez and European Commissioner Vassiliou hold constructive discussions on major priorities for European Leagues

The EPFL Chairman, Mr. Frédéric Thiriez, met on the 16 July 2013 with the European Commissioner Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou, in Brussels, to address some of the most pressing challenges currently facing the European football Leagues. This is the first meeting between both personalities since Mr. Thiriez was appointed ad interim Chairman of the European Leagues’ international representative organisation, on 15 May 2013.

Several key issues were discussed during the meeting, including the Leagues’ vital role within sport and the European Union, recognition and legal protection for sports competitions organisers rights, sports betting regulation and the fight against match-fixing, international transfers and players’agents regulations, among others.  The visit, which has further strengthened the excellent cooperative relation between both institutions, was held in a very cordial and amicable atmosphere.

At the end of the meeting, the European Commissioner in charge of Sport and the EPFL Chairman highlighted the positive results already accomplished thanks to the long standing dialogue and cooperation between both institutions and expressed their commitment to further strengthen this fruitful relationship in order to more efficiently meet the increasing challenges facing both Professional Football and Europe.

Within this context, Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said: “It was a good opportunity to touch base with the new Chairman of the EPFL. There is undoubtedly a strong convergence in the priorities and the values that we share in relation to sport, most notably integrity and solidarity. These are the pillars on which the professional game has to base itself. The Commission works closely with the EPFL on many issues and I look forward to continuing this close collaboration with the new Chairman.”

On behalf of the EPFL, Chairman Frédéric Thiriez stated: “Ms Vassiliou and I are fighting the same battle in defense of sport, its integrity and its values – especially solidarity”.
